Using Ternary Form in Compositions

Posted on Jul 3, 2015 by Administrator

If you haven't already done so, you should check out my article on Using Binary Form in Compositions - I'm going to skip some things covered in that article or assume they're understood. Ternary form is the "other" big traditional musical form. Binary is | A | B || Ternary is | A | B | A || So notice there are three "sections" but only two major musical ideas. This is a little confusing because many people think A B C or A A B might also...

Voicing and Using Second Inversion Triads in Four Part Writing

Posted on Jul 3, 2015 by Administrator

This is a very confusing topic and hopefully this article will shed some light on how Second Inversion Triads are Voiced, and used in traditional four part writing. Rule number 1: Double the Bass. Ok, now we're done. Seriously. There's only one acceptable voicing of a second inversion chord in four parts - double the 5th of the chord, which is the bass. R355. Period. Ok, there are some exceptions :-). But they're pretty rare. You're always safe if you double...

In reading some other posts, and in discussing Forms in the previous articles, I realized something that I might be forgetting to mention that many might find helpful. In Common Practice Period (CPP) works in the Tonal style - and music that continues to be written in a Tonal style - we look at a very important formal and structural characteristic - Tonality! That's why all these theorists call Tonal music Tonal - it's about Tonality - Key centers! So many students get...

What the Heck is Rounded Binary (and why do I need it)?

Posted on Jul 3, 2015 by Administrator

Somewhere between Binary Form and Ternary Form lies the often mentioned, but also misunderstood Rounded Binary Form. Rounded Binary is a stupid name. It's not really Binary - it's Ternary. But it's not "truly" Ternary. Some theorists call Rounded Binary "Incipient Binary" - incipient means "almost" - the problem is, if anything, it's actually Incipient Ternary. Or is it already Ternary, and beginning to devolve into Binary? Oh who...

10 Tips for Composing for Piano

Posted on Jul 3, 2015 by Administrator

This article is in reaction to the many "stereotypical" piano pieces I see composed by students and beginning (and sometimes advanced) composers, and the presentation is sarcastic, so please forgive me: 1. Just because the left and right hand staves divide at middle C, it doesn't mean that the LH always has to play low, and the RH high. 2. Just because there are three pedals on the piano, it doesn't mean you have to use them. 3. Just because there are three...
