Lost and Michael Giacchino

I don't know how many Lost fans there are here but- has anyone paid any attention to the music for the series (particularly Season 1)?

I personally think Michael Giacchino is a genius- this is without a doubt the best television soundtrack I have ever heard.

What do you think?

Nope, haven't had the chance / time to get into Lost (hoping to rent / borrow the first couple of seasons this summer though). Giacchino does have a knack of doing some great stuff mixing orchestral and contemporary textures - liked what he did with Alias and The Incredibles. He's obviously made good friends with Mr. Abrams getting Lost, Alias and MI:III!

I've had the fortune of admiring folks who compose for kids shows the past few years - a side effect of having three kids. If you get a chance, take a listen to what's going on in the Backyardigans, Little Einsteins, Wonder Pets, Bear in the Big Blue House... When you couple almost 30 minutes of music (and high-quality complex stuff - not just wallpaper music) having to be done in the matter of a week or two, it's a wonder these guys can keep it up and get rest at the same time!

Re: Lost and Michael Giacchino

I've got to agree the standard Michael Giacchino has set for television soundtracks is very high. I wouldn't quite call him a genius (in my opinion) he's just doing what film composers have been doing for years now. The scale of the production of Lost is quite massive, and fortunately the producers didn't overlook the music side which unfortunately is often the case.

I think what this has done is shed some light on the importance the music plays in television dramas is just as great as that of feature films (Lately there has been much more quality music used in television programs). Michael Giacchino's score has definatly played a significant role in Lost's success and I particularly admire his use of brass effects not often heard and executed so well on the small screen.
