Re: Anyone here like Elgar?

I Love Elgar, such beatiful music he wrote....
I'm in love with his Cello Concerto, which reveal so much of his love towards his lost wife...
and lovely Enigma Variation is one of my favourite Elgar pieces as well.

Re: Anyone here like Elgar?

I've never had any doubt about his immense skills as a composer/orchestrator. Thankfully his music was kept in the public eye enough that it survives today (in spite of the Pomp and Circumstance/last night of the proms thing). He could turn his hand to miniatures as easily as large items. My two favourites are the Enigma and the 2nd Symphony, masterpieces in every respect. Fav large work is Starlight Express.

Elgar's music makes good study for an orchestrator likely to handle large resources. His command of the orchestral tutti is exemplary.

The one pain is this guy called Payne who insists on "finishing" Elgar's later fragments like the 3rd Symphony - evern after Elgar specifically asking for it to be left alone. I can't get along with musicologists who couldn't even write the first 8 bars of a symphony so have to tamper with the work of the brilliant and famous, just to get their names in the books somehow. (I feel even worse about Cerha tinkering with Berg).

Re: Anyone here like Elgar?

Sadly, I have not exposed myself to very much Elgar. I have enjoyed what I've heard from him. Perhaps its time to expand my horizons on this subject.

I agree with you morally, but the Paul Daniel recording of it with the Bournemouth SO contains so much wonderful music and sounds so Elgarian to me, that I'm glad I own that CD.

The same could possibly be argued about Deryck Cooke's performing draft of Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony, but in hindsight, after recordings such as Rattle, Chailly and Sanderling, I don't hear many complain...
