Brahms So, who else here really likes his music? I'm particularly fond of his symphonies (2 & 4 my picks), his piano concertos, and works for piano solo. Some claim he is the heir to Beethoven, but I think he is in a league of his own, and even though the legacy exists, Brahms managed to strike out his own voice in a way that both expresses his intentions while adhering to the traditions before him. And I think he is better than most of the Romantic composers along the veins of Liszt and Wagner (there was a big rivalry between the factions of Schumann-Brahms and Liszt-Wagner) because he is able to show that music in the classical tradition can be expressive and thought-provoking without having to be extremely flashy or melodramatic.

I am a big Brahams fan. (I'll stick with Bulow's 3B's.) As I get older, I like his stuff even more. I particularly like the chamber music and piano stuff. (Of course, I like the symphonies and concertos too.) The clarinet quintet is my favorite chamber music. (Right up there with Frank's piano quintet and Beethoven's Opus 131 and 132.)

Yeah his chamber music is great. At the moment I'm studying his piano quintet in Fm (3rd movement) which is fasinating. I haven't listened to any of his concertos, which are his more prominent ones?

I like alot of Brahms' work. Especially the Hungarian Dances, (but then again, who doesn't like those?) Although it's rather interesting that it seems that everything good that he wrote was in an odd numbered time signature like 3/4 or 5/4 but everything else that was written in an even time 4/4 2/4 and such. Just seems sub par to me

Re: Brahms Over the years, Brahms has grown on me in a big way, especially the symphonies. One must hear great recordings or performances though, as routine ones can be boring. There's a certain rhythmic swing to some Brahms that I find amazing...
