Hey everyone, I'm wasn't sure which section of the forum to put this in but I thought this was the most suitable... Um what is the difference between a philharmonic orchestra and an orchestra? or any other kind of orchestra like a radio orchestra or chamber orchestra or a string orchestra (I think I know about that one)????? Oh yeah and does anyone know who the first oboe is in the Berlin Philharmonic these days? Regards, Ben

There are different kinds of standard orchestras: Symphony orchestra which got strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion ++ String orchestra which got nothing but strings (sometimes percussion?) Symphonic band which is wind and percussion based Accordeon orchestra which got accordeons+bass accordeon, sometimes percussion, guitar and string bass etc. etc. Philharmonic and radio orchestras is generally symphony orchestras of some sort, chamber orchestras are often string orchestras. Then you have the sinfonietta setup, which is basically a small symphony orchestra with single ww and brass (i. e. only one of each wind instrument) + percussion. Just a short overview. :-) Regards

Marketing. New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philharmonia, etc. There's no real difference. The names are there for marketing purposes.
