I've been composing since 1997 - almost 9 years now.
The main difference however is that for me it's always been a pure hobby, and I don't do it on manuscript - it's all electronic. I used to use trackers back in the early days before making the financial jump to sequencers in 2002-2003, and now I do what can considered to be midi-mockups of my own compositions. I've never properly touched manuscript from a composition point of view.

Waah, so I'm not the only one who started not too long ago, I started composing seriously about 9 months ago; I made my riddles, but nothing to boast about before that (not that I boast now, I hate to boast >.>)

Wow! Officially, I began about ten years ago in college. Technically, I first composed during piano classes about 17 years ago (sheesh!). One summer I was the only student participating in a group piano class. Having a few years of piano already under my belt, my teacher decided to give me some composing assignments. I even had the opportunity to play an original piece for the NGPT guild auditions. Between the two time periods it was more of a hobby given little attention as I was more interested in performance. In college I fell in love with composing and performance took a rear seat to it.

I've never properly "began" composing. I've only ever just played around with tunes and came up with a few things every now and then. But I suppose officially it was about a year or two ago

I started about 15 years ago (when I was 18). I'm self-taught, but took a couple of very basic classes in college (but never finished them). I started out composing mostly Japanese pop music, jazz fusion, film/animation scores, industrial/techno..etc. The older I get, the more eclectic my influences became. Now just about anything under the sun is game, and I don't really bother making a distinction between genres, time periods..etc--they're all just different colors on my palette of influences.

Err... that's my wife's hand you kissed, not mine (my avatar is her photo).

My hand is over here if you still want to kiss it.
