When did you start composing?

Hello all you happy people

I thought this might be a good way to get to know some of the members around here.

I started not too long ago, about..... 5 months, and I've been learning ALOT since then.

Anyone else care to share?

I am just started to compose some ochestra music this month. Not yet complete one. Quite difficult to complete a whole piece. Cause I am doing piece by piece each night and the idea is little by little gather up. Sometimes, its just out of idea to continue.
I also have some arranging work in hand. Cause I also compose pop music myself, just for expression. Started almost 6years back

I only started taking composing seriously when I had to do it for my GCSEs 2 years ago. Both my pieces did well so I felt more confident. Since then I have tried to read a lot more about it and have done a lot of theory!

At the moment in AS I'm learning about composing Bach Chorales, Variations, Serialism and later Film Music which is a nice range I think.

Outside of school I've been writing a couple of songs for musicals, one of which is basically finished now. And then of course whenever I sit at a piano I end up improvising or playing around with chords so I've got a few motifs in my head that I might use sometime...

I started composing when I was about 15 just before my GSCE. I finished it in a year (instead of 2 years) and got an A* in composition. From there I had a year where I didn't do any proper composing, only little pieces nothing serious. Then I got commissioned to write for an orchestra, so I had to kick it in to gear again. Then I started AS level music passing composition with an A. Now I'm studying A level music. I've also recenetly been commissioned to write for a 15 minute film for november. Thats my composing history

This may sound kind of ridiculous but what is a GSCE out of curiosity?

In england every child between 15-16 has to take stand 2 year courses called GCSE's (General Certificate of Education). Only English, Maths and Science are compulsory. Other art's such as music and drama are not compulsory.

Hope this helps

I started in high school. I didn't really study any music theory until about 10 years ago (about the time I decided to retire.)
