What Inspired You To Compose A Certain Piece?

We all have a defining moment in our lives that drags a piece of music from the depths. Okay sometimes we just write without too much thought but there are those moments when loss or elation gives us the motivation to write, what was yours?

The music fills my head - I write it down to get rid of it

Exactly. I just wait until something I cannot identify shows up and try to notate that.

I just try to write to relax. It's fun to see how the music will turn out.

I was once inspired to write a piano piece by a rock skipping across the water

Truthfully I'm mostly inspired to write by my teacher telling me what she requires for next week.

Over Christmas I've had to finish my Bach SATB and write two piano duets for teaching purposes, one in C and one in Gm, with pupil part at pre grade one level and starting with hands on the tonic notes. (Just got the Gm to do). Oh, and she expects progress on my Grade 4 song...

Its always good to have very strict deadlines, its makes very good composers. I remember writing for a woodwind quartet (2 Flutes, 2 Clarinets) I played clarinet in, many concerts were 2 week jobs, music written in a week, the piece practiced in a week then performed. Some music even written in a night...some was good, some was not!

Always good experience though, never turn down a job

On to topic, hmm, depending on what mood i'm in, I can churn out a composition methodically without much inspiration but what really gets me going is big orchestra and choir pieces, they inspire me to create big works. other than that, my head swimming with new ideas I want to try out, I get them down onto paper, or into Siblius.

A composition in a night! That's quite impressive.

The only music that I have ever finished has been for my composition class. I have written a few other things but I never finished them. All of them (except for one choral piece) have not been inspired by anything.
