Write a concerto for world whistling champion David Morris!

Write a concerto for world whistling champion David Morris!

The rules are simple, write a concerto in any style in any form, but a few things have to be taken into consideration:
  • His range is 2 and a half octave, starting with c an octave below middle c, up to g one octave and a half above middle c
  • Double and Tripple tounging is possible
  • Whistling takes more breath than blowing a wind or brass instrument! Remember breathing space
If you need inspiration why not watch David Morris' promotional video here

All scores will be considered by our staff and a small selection will be chosen to be passed on to Mr. David Morris.

Happy Writing :-)

OK, for that range, what clef is appropriate? Do whistlers use the alto clef?

Good question!

I would assume that the best solution is to write the solo one octave up in treble clef.

For anyone not in the know, the clef Thorolf describes looks like this:

Okay that sounds good. Now for a few other considerations.
How long would be comfortable for him?

What kind of instrumentation should we be using?
Last(and you won't like this but I have to ask) will there be a fee if he is going to perform the piece on his tour schedule?

I would say keep it maximum 10 mins

What kind of instrumentation should we be using?
Just consider the performance circumstances, the piece needs to be performed so electronic instruments are a no no. I would suggest a maxmium of a half orchestra (full strings, 1 instrument per woodwind instrument, small selection of brass and percussion), obviously your not obligated to use every instrument, some times lessi s more

will there be a fee if he is going to perform the piece on his tour schedule?
I'm not 100% sure on this one so I will ask David Morris but I would assume that there will be no fee given. The aim is mutal benefit. Your piece getting performed by the world whistling champion would get alot of heads turning your way

Re: Write a concerto for world whistling champion David Morris!

Just a quick question about the range:

"His range is 2 and a half octave, starting with c an octave below middle c, up to g one octave and a half above middle c"

Is that the written range or the actual sounding range?
