Help Me Here!

I know I have asked this question before (I think). I would love to have a go at composing using a different method to Sibelius/Finale etc. Most of you guys use other methods here and get to use VI's a lot.

My question is can anyone recommend a programme that is easy to use, has lots of sounds and not too expensive.

Links to their pages will help but I would like to here what some of you have to say about the merits of the different programs out there.

Re: Help Me Here!

My situation hasn't changed - well, worsened by the arrival of Vista. I need a faster pc to move forward, that means vista (or a lot of s*dding about), which means waiting for at least 6 months by which time...the vista bugs will be sorted out; and the software houses will have proofed their wares in vista (one hopes).
I no longer have time nor patience for technical stuff so I don't want to be effectively testing this stuff.

Have a look at what I said before.

I switched to Sibelius from Finale a couple of years ago. That was just as Notion was coming out - didn't have a lot of integrating-with-DAWs features yet and was at version 1.x. Seems as though it's been getting a lot of good reviews lately - both from an intuitive approach to scoring and support of a nice sound-set.

I'd like to check it out when I come up for some air...

Re: Help Me Here!

Are you thinking of a sequencer with samples? People seem to like Cubase SX. I don't know if it works with Garritan P O. but they would make a reasonable start. Does anyone know for certain if Garritan works with Cubase?
The Northern Sounds forum would probably help with a question like that.

Re: Help Me Here!

Cubase SX should work with no issues with GPO. If you have routing problems, there exists a solution.

Re: Help Me Here!

What I think I want(!) is a programme that inputs like a score writing programme but uses proper instrumental sounds. I quite like the piano roll type entry.

I can confirm it works fine.

You can do that with Cubase though the score writing abilities aren't as good as Sibelius. Notion is an ok choice (only used the demo)

Electronic Musician did a "round-up" of popular notation software back in November:
