| Any flute players around? This is the first tryout of an intermezzo/concert piece for solo flute. It still needs a bit of work and there's a marginal complaint about it reaching the top C# when it's written for a flute with Bb foot. It's a mix of abstract but with a melodic section. I tried to be 'idiomatic' but the worst was trying to stop it sounding like Syrinx! Any volunteers?! Any comments would be much appreciated. http://www.soundclick.com/util/getpl...d=5489907&q=hi cheers... |

| Re: Any flute players around? I don't know a thing about playing a flute, but I think this is an intriguing piece. It sounds atonal (and probably is, although I might be wrong), but somehow it also sounded like the E Phrygian mode in a way. Did you use serialism or set theory when composing this? I've started to delve into those subjects, too, so I'd be interested to know. Overall this is a moody, shadowy piece. It reminds me of being in a deep forest. I loved the flute sound here. | Re: Any flute players around? Hey, thanks for the comments. I'll be reworking it soon to try to give it more space, if that makes sense. Hope eventually to hear it performed - there was a complaint from a potential performer so I might have to do something about that too. Yes, I'm writing more atonally now though I don't recognise any real barrier between tonal and atonal. I do use serial processes (not in the 12-note sense) to set up a basic row then use it as source material. Rather than follow strict Schoenbergian rules, the overall sound is paramount so I'll do as necessary to achieve that. If ever there is an audience, it'll be there to listen rather than delve into the technical minutiae of the work! I hope, anyway. So, again, thanks. I'll try to post a song soon, (mezzo piano flute clarinet and cello) where notation problems are playing up. cheers. Last edited by reith : 23-09-2007 at 09:03 AM. |

| Re: Any flute players around? Cool solo. I can't tell the compositional process from just listening to it, but it sounds intuitively appealing. It jumps a bit all over the place, but as an ex-flute player (how do you play ex-flutes?) it doesn't sound impossible to me. Victor. |
