As Close to You

Hoping, over the winter to reconstruct some (very brief) settings of 6 haiku. They were written ages ago for a boy with a very high treble voice until it broke. No chance of catching that again so I'm re-doing them for contralto or mezzo.

This one is the briefest, just over a minute - the strings ostinato would get really monotonous if extended. The ending is abrupt but it doesn't segue immediately into the next one - just pauses for a few seconds.

Any comment would be appreciated, particularly whether it's short enough to avoid boredom.
Thanks,
Reith.

The voice is substituted by an alto flute.
The lyrics:

I wish I were......
As close to you....
As...the wet shirt......of a swimmer to her body....

(Interlude)

I think of you....forever.

Rather explicit lyrics!

Beautiful theme!

Looking forward to the whole song! :EDIT: Oops, I reread your post: So this is the whole song? It’s short enough to avoid boredom, but the abruptness of the ending doesn’t really communicate the “forever” part of the lyrics, so it seems ironic (which I presume was not the intention!).

Thanks!

Well, the haiku was written in the 8th century I think - maybe a liberal age in Japan?

Originally that string figure faded out over 3 repeats so perhaps it's best left at that, as you say, to give it a feeling of everness.

I hope to have another sorted out soon - barely needs reconstruction as I still have the vocal score. The lyrics are less, uh, physical.
I'll bet that when I've done all this I'll find the original score in the roof of the garage or somewhere!
Cheers.

Well, there's an ice-cream cart back up there if you care for one! - Has its own line in the score!!
I've almost got the next one ready, also on a beach. Just having trouble with solo string samples, trying to get some expressiveness.

(Thinks - about time I got one of these avatars...)

I don’t know the history of japanese haiku themes, but I know that some chinese poetry from the same period would be rather liberal to modern protestant christians…

In general, we tend to think that the history of sexual liberation is linear, from early “victorian” to modern “liberated”, when in fact sexuality has been far more natural and integrated in general life in days of old, and in other cultures, than in the modern world of today.
