3-part Fugue

1 min 40 sec.

This was a recent exercise...to try to write a modern if diatonic fugue. It's for 3 'voices'. No.3 is doubled at the octave to mark the entry.
It didn't work too well so I didn't try for a 4th voice. Writing it seemed a little mechanistic.

The entries are in C, G and D respectively.

mp3 here!

I've attached a midi in lieu of a score.

Re: 3-part Fudge

Very good theme! It’s all good, except for the ending… too abrupt for the content. The energy flows very well, and there are energy peaks in just the right places. I have a hard time hearing the subject entries but in the beginning, but that is no issue, as it’s well composed… but the last 7-8 seconds… where you seem to loose it. I’d cut here, start over from that point, not necessarily compose it much longer, maybe just a few bars, but heeding the harmonic/energic tension better. Maybe bring in some of the semi-organ point ways you use a couple of times earlier in the piece, to make it fall to rest? I dunno. But the rest is so good, you should wrestle with this ending! It’s worth it!

Is it Akoustik Piano you use for rendering?

Regards

Re: 3-part Fugue

Thanks! Yes, those last few seconds. I was determined to get some kind of stretto in and... it doesn't work. Sounds more of a jangle than fudge. Have a train journey coming up today so I'll have a look at it.

Will, the title comes from having to fudge it...sort of some way between bluffing it and bodging it up.

cheers,
reith

Oh I know, I just like to play with people about funny sounding titles or typos

No offense intended

I really like the entry of the second voice. I also like it when you play with the major scale somewhere after 1:00, it sounds beautiful! Actually, I really like the whole piece except for a couple of moments. Are you going to give it another shot?

None taken, Will
Some kindly soul changed the thread title anyway though the piece remains 'fudge' (probably plain vanilla)!

I may...I never liked that stretto so I may change that. It was only an exercise but some moments seem to work and I'm encouraged by the comments here...

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Ps, I did change it but I've used my creative ration for the day. This is just to say I did consider the comments. I altered the stretto but attempts to abandon it made me want to delete the lot. It's still a beat out but I might as well move on.

Re: 3-part Fugue

Very nice! The subject took me surpirse. I loved it and I really loved the entry of the third voice. The counterpoint between the subject and answer was wonderful! I really enjoyed the shifting of traditional and non traditional hamonies. Its a very fun piece. It almost feels like some kind of a minuet from a dream. I will agree that the ending is a little abrupt for my taste as well.

Great work!
