Vista

Just to mention I'm reading initial reports about how none of these music software companies are willing to commit themselves yet on how Vista will affect their wares developed for Xp.

Not sure how to react. I definitely need a more powerful computer at home. It will come with Vista as the OS in one of its forms. Since I wouldn't buy any microsoft software for c 6 months after release, it looks like I'll have to wait for some of the stuff I've been enquiring about recently.

10 reasons not to get Vista

but

10 reasons you should get Vista

and some of those are not really nice, more kinda like fatalistic:
10. Face it, you have no choice
When Microsoft brings out a major renovation to Windows, you can choose to ignore it for a year or two, but then the device drivers start drying up for older versions of Windows, your friends start asking questions about their new PC that you can't answer, and even if you use Linux, you'll inevitably need familiarity with Microsoft's latest interoperability blockers. Face it: your a*** belongs to Redmond.
Which is not strictly true, as there are alternatives:

15 reasons to switch to Vista? How about 15 reasons to switch to OS X?

To be honest this is the one true answer:

When Microsoft brings out a major renovation to Windows, you can choose to ignore it for a year or two, but then the device drivers start drying up for older versions of Windows, your friends start asking questions about their new PC that you can't answer, and even if you use Linux, you'll inevitably need familiarity with Microsoft's latest interoperability blockers. You can try ignore vista, but as soon as things come out "Vista only compatible" and devlopers no longer support lower operating systems, you've got no choice really.

But I wish it wasn't this way. If devlopers got together to ensure that they will not leave XP (probably the standard operating systems for most computer users nowerdays) high and dry they could probably bring down the "Dicatator" status microsoft has in the computer market.

The thing I dislike is becuase Mircrosoft generally owns the market (or a large majority of it) they generally set the standards of how everyone should use their computer.

A personal thing I hate with microsoft operating systems is how they are always trying to help you out , little buttons poping up everywhere, a little characters telling you how to search etc, it seems to have got worse as more operating systems come out. So I shudder to think of the loveable characters they've shipped with Vista.

So your b*tt belongs to someone, anyway.

But new macs can use Windows alongside with Mac OSX with no need for rebooting, using a program that is called Parallels Desktop. The next time I upgrade, I will but an intel mac, run everyday tasks on OS X, and maybe Wavelab and a couple of other Windoze only proggies on the XP side. For the Windows driver upgrade carousel, people should know that one rarely need drivers for mac, printers etc. usually work right out of the box. And if you got a working driver, you will most certainly never need to upgrade it.

Unfortunatly yeah

The Mac sounds like its got some cool features. The thing stopping me is compatibility of the software I already own. Its rare developers bring out hybrid software that can work on both platforms

But you can still run everything you own on the Windoze side of your new mac…

Sheesh! (Claps hand to forehead) Same here.

"I see you're writing a novel. Would you like some help?"

Soon it'll be an animated quaver popping up with "Ha! I see you're writing a symphony. Would you like help?"
Yes please.
"Sorry, your search found 0 results."

I also hate the way so much software ASSUMES so much as if its programmer sees fit to drive your life, let alone asssuming you don't know what you want.
And the way, when the pc fires up, seems about a dozen flags pop up from the bottom....urgent attention/there's a java update available/you're wireless connection is up....and on and on. And all I want is to write something.... people disdain me still using paper and pencil but damn-it-all, I just want to compose something not wait 5 mins for the admin to grind into action...then crash one second before I'm ready to save.

But tell you what? I wouldn't trust Gill Bates to wire his wretched contraptions to run my home (re the recent los Angeles show). "OMG...how do I reboot the house? I only switched on a light by hand...." / "Your message is 193rd in a queue. We hope to have a salesperson available soon to advise you about the latest upgrade...." Uh, what? Helpline? No such luck, matey, Ms don't go in for that sort of thing these days.

I wonder how much of this vista thing is functional improvement against cosmetics and change for the sake of it.

Same, I would much prefer a OS that performed better and didn't bog down the pc with fancy splash screens and menus. XP is nice but you hardly need it to be any flashier. It seems that these new OS's aren't designed to be fast and streamline. They seem to use more and more CPU and RAM with each new addition.

One big thing, reliability! Microsoft hardly offer enough support for their OS, if you bought a car and sothing went wrong you expect nothing but help and good service, microsoft sell you their products and hide away. If you've got a problem you usually have to find a solution in a windows forum setup up by volunteers who want to try help each other out, because no one at Microsoft will.

Quoting the first reason not to get Vista:
1. You don't actually need it -- No, think about this. Vista doesn't do anything you can't already do with XP. About the only significant shift requiring Vista is DirextX10, but as no titles support it yet and, according to John Carmack (the godfather of modern gaming) there's no need to yet either.
