Sinfonietta 3rd section

for String Orchestra
3 mins
mostly tonal if a bit acerbic.

Unfortunately the mp3 attenuates the bass a bit.

The last section/movement of what's loosely called a Sinfonietta. Simple A-B-A form.

It's taken an age to write and I can't see myself writing anything else like it unless I can get a long holiday!

It's still in rough score though, so any suggestions or comments would be gratefully received. My personal reaction is that the end is a bit abrupt but I do think it's played itself out by then.

cheers, and thanks for any comment.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Sounds like an interesting cross between tonal and modernish music. Was that a piano I hear somewhere around 1:00? Or maybe it's just pizzicato strings. Anyway, their bouncing adds a very nice touch throughout the piece. The melodies are complicated, keeping the overall mood a bit abstract. As you say, the ending seems a bit abrupt, but perhaps the listener would get used to it on successive listenings. It's not too abrupt in my opinion.

I regret I cannot give any suggestions for improvement, as I don't understand theory that well, and I'm rather unfamiliar with modern art music (although recently I was exposed to one of Erkki-Sven Tüür's compositions ). But to me this sounds solid and quite listenable. Not entirely my style, but interesting nonetheless.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Interesting piece reith, I especially like the motives you use and how you manipulate them. Certainy very interesting to hear and absorb.

I agree about the end, a little abrupt. I think a bartok pizz on the lower strings would sound quite effective? Maybe make it sound a bit more final.

Unfortunately the mp3 attenuates the bass a bit.
What samples did you use for this? If you like send me a midi or sibelius file and I'll put EWQL Symphonic Orchestra on it It might yeild better results.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad this work is finished - will wait for the holiday to put the three sections together to see how they work.

I definitely need to do something and will think about that and the timing of the final thump.

Thanks for the offer. I'll try to save it as a midi - it doesn't always work. It's in 18 tracks, various string articulations and fader tracks. However, you're pretty busy at the moment. I could probably tart it up a bit more, tweak the dynamics and if I have to I'll put it through an outboard (analogue) equaliser and reverb.
I'll try the midi out anyway.
(The Muzys file is 128Mb, wavs embedded).

cheers.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Ahh I see, I wasn't sure how you composed this. I thought you would have used a notation program such as Sibelius or Finale.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Hello reith!

I have listened to both sections, I understand that it is part 1 and 3 that is finished? Anyway, I will be listening to this work a lot in the next days. I feel that this is a full bodied composition that deserves attention. It would have been nice to have the score to read. I think I will be coming back with more questions and comments later. Good work!

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Thanks!
I have a reasonably neat score of the 1st section but the 3rd is still messy - good enough to set up the sequncer but illegible for others.

The work started as an exercise to break an obsession with certain interval sequences and locrian phrases hence the 4ths and 5ths in the opening.

I'll happily answer questions if I can, also post the first part score (also have one for part 2 and an mp3 - however, that's a lot of music to get through!) I usually pull the scores out when the thread drops down a bit - just space-consciousness!

cheers,
reith.

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Oh I have plenty of space in my email.
So when and if you have the time, i would be interested in reading your scores. It doesn´t matter if they´re only set up for sequencer.

My email is: yerik60@gmail.com

regards

Re: Sinfonietta 3rd section

Hi again,

Here's the score of the first section. Like I said, the 3rd will probably be unintelligible to anyone but me. I could scan some to prove it!
