Variation or "interlude - dialogue"

Duration: approx 5 mins.

Somewhat puzzled about how to treat this piece.

It's a long story but in a couple of sentences I got involved with a project that eventually fell through. To get a head start however, I sketched some of the music.

Now I'm trying to rescue some.
This piece was meant as 1 of 4 variations on a "main theme" but it was difficult to dismiss the scene to which it related and it got a bit over-developed for that role.

I may therefore bundle it with other loosely related pieces to form a suite in which case an intro for the cellos that appear further into the movement is needed. In this role it's a "dialogue".

The setting was two people in dialogue somehow coming to terms with each other, all on the edge of a desert-like area.

I put it in "orchestral" as the rest of the work (when it happens) is definitely more orchestral.

Any comments much appreciated.

A very cool piece. Your really capture the "dialogue" sort of idea between the cello and flute.

So are you planning to add the orchestra behind the flute and cello from the start?

Thank you!

No, I don't plan to orchestrate this piece more heavily (except possibly some "sul g" violins if I have to write an intro, just to keep that deeper resonant sound). The other pieces in the suite will be scored for at least:

2 flutes
oboe/Cor Anglais
2 clrinets
2 horns
(harp, if I think I can get a player)
strings.

Always hoping I can come up with enough music to turn it into a suite.

Cheers,
Reith

All this time when I saw this post and I thought I commented on the piece already and it turns out that I hadn't.

Well, anyway...
You did capture the "dialogue" aspect very well with this piece. I like the fact that when the dialogue is going on there is no interuption from the orchestra. Instead you chose to use the orchestra as moments of interlude to help portray the idea.

Wow, nice. Just a bit more flow in the flute/EH section would be nice though. Are you distributing scores?
