Nice piece, its slow to begin but once it gets to 1:30 I like how you've scored the falling string motif across the whole string section then modulated to the minor and the piece becomes a lot more expressive. You make good use of your falling string motif which keeps a sense of familiarity throughout the piece. I think the weakest part of the piece is from the beggining to 1:30, it could be the recording but I can't tell without a score in front of me.
I see many tierce de picardi's in there, are you baroque influenced?
Overall A really good piece, that would see more justice on a real orchestra. Just out of interest how old are you?

Yes, I am inspried by the philosophy of baroque music very much. But, I do try to make sure that I don't forget my own musical identity.

I am glad you enjoyed the piece. It is "slow" in the opening.

To answer your question, I am 26 years old. I currently teach piano, compositiona and theory at a performance arts school in the United States.

Its always good to have that motivation to succeed and to set your sights high.

I live by this famous quote by Rovert Browning:

“Ah, but a man’s reach must exceed his grasp or what is heaven for”

Thanks for you nice comments. I'm flattered that you feel my piece gives you inspiration to aspire to create music of quality. I have already posted a thread with a link to the first movement. The third movment will be up shortly. The symphony is a few years old so I have to put it back on Finale again as the first time version was somehow deleted. Just keep studying, keep composing and trying new things and remember to be critical of your own works without beating yourself up and you'll achieve quality.

A very nice piece. It seems your identity shows through as ever ,though your more recent work has a little more chromatic harmony.
I'd have loved to see a score so I could learn from the doublings!

I'm hardly in a position to comment though - altogether good. I particularly noticed the balance between the strings' broken chords and woodwind/brass backing. Nicely balanced.

I agree with MaestroX that it is impossible to judge if there is “too little” going on (in a relative way) in the beginning without seeing the score… (but I do suspect it could use some editing)

Otherwize, fine ideas, good form, and I really like the utilisation of kettle drums! People don’t know what to use them for… but you do!

On the other hand, as a part of a whole, the form could be justified after all. Need to see/hear it alongside the other movements to say…

Good work!

Is it performed live yet?

Regards

Thank you all for listening and commenting. The symphony has not been performed live. It was rejected on 2 separate occasions because it was seen as difficult. I'm still looking into having it performed, though.

Due to the cautions of my composition teacher, I've always felt a little uneasy about posting my scores online. But, since some of you have requested to learn and understand the music further I will consider posting the score.

For those of you who would like to hear the first movement here is the link to the thread.
Symphony in B Major (An old piece revisited)

The third movement is on its way.

I may post a score by the end of the week. I don't know what you mean by you not being in a position to comment. But, I appreciate any comment you make.

Thanks!

Again, thanks for listening and for your comments. I do love using Kettle drums/timpani and it is one of the things I do naturally and I do strive improve my own techniques regarding kettle drum usage. As I said, I will probably post a score at the end of the week.

The symphony has not been performed as yet. I've only had a reading of the first movement.
