Golden Valour Overture

This is an early work of mine written when I was 15. I regard this work as my first "major" piece. So please tell me what you think.

Very nice! I totally see this as being used in a RPG. Only one suggestion, it would be a nice contrast to add a short fugue at the very end or in the middle a la the ancient french overture. You might not think this fits with the character of the piece, but I think it could make it even better.

A very nice piece. It does sound RPG-like. But, that's not a bad thing. It is grand sounding. Almost a sense of ceremonial pomp and circumstance.

A very good piece for a 15 year old!

Very interesting

I agree that it sounds sort of RPG esque in a sense. But I got more of the feeling later on about a soldier's march right before battle.

I give much more in depth reviews with a score, but these are my only quips. (and I will only tell you honestly knowing this was from a little while back) It seems to suffer a little from music ADD IMO. It kind of jumps from place to place without concentrating a whole lot on a single subject and expanding on the subject.

Note: This is only my honest opinion, I'm sure you are a much better composer now

cheers

SIMH

Thanks for all your comments. At the time I was very influenced by RPG and film music. So theres traces in there.
I agree with you Sor it does move from idea to idea a common problem with young composers!
I can post a score if you wish?

I don't know if this is allowed but I easily got the score by opening the midi file in my sheet music program (Print Music). I think most programs have this feature.

Anyway I think it's a good piece - even with the changes in ideas you kept familiar motifs (like that funny trill thing...) running all the way through. Not too sure about the harp but good on you for using it - I'd be far too scared!

Yeah when I look back at it, i've scored a few instruments wrong. The timpani being one. For rolls I for some strange reason used trills instead of tremolo and at the time I had no idea harps used pedals.

It's like some score of an adventureseries like relichunter or The New World(or something; it's the show where some expedition crashes in some jungle where there are dinosaurs and have strange adventures)
If I loaded it up it didn't look very well structured but it is prolly the conversion.

An excellent piece for your then-age! I mean, it sounds slightly gamey in this midi version but it would sound a mix of grand and antique (as at the waltz with its lovely olde-world harmony, if played live.

For all your comment, the scoring is fine - I wasn't deliberately listening out for "mistakes" (and/or maybe the midi hides them) but they weren't noticeable.

Lovely!
Reith.
