Light Overture

timing: 2'15" approx
scoring: 2121 2(horns) perc strings.

I was thinking of putting a Suite together so this could be the overture. A bit old world, still... I drafted it last year and tried to get it in the sequencer a few months ago.

It didn't work at first - my laptop is too slow to handle lots of events - so I had to re-do it in separate layers. The dynamics still need tweaking.

Any comments would be gratefully received, particularly if there are glaring "errors".

Cheers.

Nice lighthearted overture you have here Reith. It makes me feel happy just listening to it. It sort of reminds me of Christmas a bit

My only critique is that you barely seemed to use the brass, either you were using them and I couldn't hear them, or you didn't use them a whole lot. IMO it's important to get equal treatment from all the different sections of the orchestra and/or Ensemble.

But other than that. Nice, Happy, and delightful

Post more!

Will

I'm usually the last guy to get technical about music theory, orchestration, etc. So, errors? What, me worry? I wholeheartedly agree that this is really happy and fun to listen to. It reminds me of Leroy Anderson or a soundtrack from the Golden Age of movies; in short, the music I grew up with. Is that what you were going for? If it's going to be part of a suite -- perfect. You could always add louder or softer movements for variety on the whole. Build on it, man. Looking forward to hearing more.

Cheers! Glad the happy feeling came across!

There's a story behind all this but basically the idea was to use session players but the budget was so tight, only a pair of horns was possible with 2 fl, 1 ob/c ang, 2 cls, 1 bsn. The thing was abandoned though I'd already sketched the theme. I may reconstruct it with more brass and expand it at the same time. Thanks for the remarks.

Hah! You just about hit it there! Yep, Leroy Anderson wrote some great light music and it was supposed to be a bit 60s/70s-y. I listened to a few tracks from lighter films of those times - the "Carry On" series!!!

Indeed, thanks for the encouragement. I might get going on more in the new year

Cheers,
Reith.

Lovely and right up my street. If you want it played let me know how much for the score/parts (I have no bassoon) and I would like to get my orchestra to look at it next year.

Very nice offer! Thank you.

Score - Hah! Well, I'll try to run one up - my handwritten drafts...no comment...but my neat finished versions are pretty legible. It shouldn't take too long - 108 bars.

As for the bassoon, this music is fully adaptable - anything in the same register (cello/horn) could play its solo part as they're having a rest right there. When I do the parts I'll cue it in for horn. I'll keep in touch - may make a start over the holidays.
Thanks again.
Reith

Can you not just scan the music and send it as pdf? Or send as a midi?

Yes, one of us would be happy to create a score for you, I'm certain of that. If you'd like, of course.

Sincere thanks for the offer!
Trouble is, to get a score into shape enough for someone to enter it into notation software, I can write it by hand. I've given lots of thought to buying finale or sibelius and unreservedly admit it's the way to go if you're getting music published on any scale but for early draft compositions, it's a no-go-er for me. I can just grab a pencil and music paper (even a little notebook while journeying) and sketch away without all the poncing about.
Well, you can tell I got into music before this software appeared and I suppose I'm also concerned about the learning time, and that the stuff won't do what I want. I think I asked elsewhere - is there a site that specifies just what sibelius or finale will and won't do, rather than a list of just features? And there's the matter of investment.

Still, this isn't the forum to bring up the many questions, just let's say there are many!

Thanks again - but it's probably easiest for me to write out the score at least this time - it's adequately legible, I'll try to find a sample to post here.

Reith

(tried but it came out too huge! I'll scan something tomorrow)

True. Whatever you post, I'll make a quick view of what it would look like as a Computer Score, just for fun.
