Need help finding a Brandenburg recording

In 1987, I recorded some Brandenburg Concertos off an LP onto tape. I foolishly didn't write down the orchestra, conductor and performance date. I spent many years trying to find the exact same recording on compact disc.

A couple years ago I managed to find the exact 3rd Brandenburg first movement. It was Academy of St-Martins in the Fields with Neville Marriner conducting - first recording of the Thurston Dart edition, P 1971. (I confirmed that it was exact by listening to CD & tape at the same time - one headphone in each ear.) Strangely, that was the only movement that was the same. Every other movement I had on the tape was different.

I tried the ASMF/Marriner 1980 recording and it didn't match either. So, for some bizarre reason, the Brandenburg LPs (set of two) I recorded from, contained the P 1971 Dart edition first movement of the 3rd Brandenburg - mixed with some other versions.

Can somebody help me figure this out? I've tried searches, but come up with either thousands of unrelated pages or nothing. The only thing I remember about the original LPs is that it was a Philips label.

Nostalgia....I think the LP set was Philips 6700 045. Marriner/Academy did a few recordings which probably differed in small ways. I think you're looking for that 1971 recording - not sure if it got reissued on CD. I'll ask around.

Re: Need help finding a Brandenburg recording

As I said, I own that 1971 recording on compact disc (and the 1980 recording) and only Brandenburg #3 first movement matches my tape recording. I assume the other pieces must be from a different ASMF/Marriner Brandenburg recording before 1987. I sent an email to the ASMF website asking if there was another Brandenburg recording between 1971 and 1980, or if there was a Philips LP release which contained the Dart 3.1, but got no response. The LP was certainly before 1987 (and definitely contained the Dart 3.1), so that rules out any ASMF/Marriner Brandenburg recording after 1987.

It's incredible that one orchestra could record so many versions of the Brandenburg Concertos.

They were popular and very good (in the ears of most critics). If you still don't get a response, try a letter to Gramphone magazine. They may publish it to their readers. Just based on a couple of experiences I know of, tablulate all the data you have carefully. It's possible Marriner made recordings before 1971 - they did for argo - I know they did a Bartok thing and (just guessing here) didn't they do the Britten Serenade pre 1970?
