JS Bach followed closely by Handel and the usual suspects: Vivaldi, Telemann, Monteverdi, Rankin, Froberger, etc. It's a long lasting era.

My two picks would be Monteverdi and Telemann.

Monteverdi IS a Baroque composer (as someone said above, it's a long period). Monteverdi is a little like Beethoven in that he bridges the gap between two stylistic periods (Ren/Bar for M, Class/Rom for . Monteverdi himself notes that there are two distinct styles going on in his lifetime, and he writes in both (sort of like if Chuck Berry also wrote Jazz).

Though I agree many people do not really consider him Baroque (largely though because they tend to think of Vivaldi onward as more "baroque-y").

Telemann is far more interesting to me than Bach or Handel (B and H were both born in 1685, T 2 years earlier IIRC). Telemann seems to have a "broader" appeal to me (like Vivaldi) than Bach does - unfortunately he's really overshadowed by Bach and Handel.

Nah, if i had to be limited to British, I'd go with Purcell! One listen to Dido's Lament won me over (and the rest of it is wonderful too).

J.S Bach, definitely. Scarlatti and Telemann as well maybe, but Vivaldi's music doesn't have too much variety in it. I'm honestly not quite a fan of many baroque composers.

To me, Scarlatti is definitely the most interesting Baroque composer. His compositions offer an INCREDIBLE amount of variety. After him probably Bach, Buxtehude, and Purcell. I dont know if anybody else feels this way, but I tend to see Handel's music as being a kind of joke in comparison to everybody else's.
