Re: Your Musical Background

I feel out of place.

I started music when I started school, age 5, it wasn't the piano, or any "instrument" as in a solid structure, I was in the choir. Did that till the third grade, then moved schools. From there didn't play any instrument until the next grade. Good ol' recorder. I assume I must have pissed off every neighbor we had within a two mile radius.

The next year, I decided I wanted to play the trombone. My music teacher advised against it, said my arms were too short. They were. So I picked up the trumpet. Played it 3 years until it was time to go to high school, then dropped out of band, I don't like marching. Picked up the guitar as a freshmen and continued with it to the present, around, say September of last year (06) I got interested in writing electronic music. But I tell you, it just wasn't cutting the butter, so my girlfriend asked me about Finale, and I said it looked like a really cool program. I had written a little trumpet stuff when I was younger, none of which was coherent, I'm a late bloomer in everything. Anyway so I got sucked into Finale, and started looking at music seriously. Started refreshing my theory knowledge and whatnot, took up the violin, last March 07, now I'm grade two in that and slowly working towards grade three, guitar finally did something other than get me laid for once.

I then got in to college with a major in music, and began looking at bachelor programs and noticed that the one college I wanted to go to required I have at least 2 years in piano, so I started taking piano lessons this summer, but, I'm mainly a violinist now, only do I occasionally pick up the guitar now.

As for interest in instrumental music, I don't call it classical because I'm an elitist (sarcasm, slightly), classical is a period to me not a large genre of music. I think it began when I was maybe seven, seven and three quarters, the only person I knew in my family that listened to it was my rich uncle. Either way I asked for some tapes and my grandmother bought me the Best of Beethoven for christmas... sweet angels!

From there I was introduced to Tchaikovsky etc, now flash forward to the present, I'm slowly working on getting all of Beethoven's Opus catalogue and from there the WOo etc etc.

Yes yes, no concerts with thousands of people, or rave reviews or anything like that. I'm just a guy that likes music and understands it.

Interesting story. How well do you play the guitar, and are you participating in an ensemble of some sort?

I'm not sure what to make of this sentence, did you just ignore all instrumental music that isn't classical music (what most people call classical, anyway )?

Re: Your Musical Background

I suppose I play pretty well, I could work on my chordal work but, thats just a matter of taste. I listen to most periods of instrumental music, give or take, I try to stay away from pre-baroque. But I'm mostly into Romantic period music.
