What CDs have you bought recently?

Just returning from holiday before starting a new contract of work, I hope...

I came back with

i) a Dutton reissue of Goossens conduction Bax (including the symphony No 2) and Antill's Corroboree, a selection of historical recordings tarted up. Not bad.

ii) The Debussy Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and orchestra c/w Mozart Clarinet Concerto and something by Toru Takemitsu (haven't had time to listen to that yet). Sabine Meyer/BPO/Abbado. One of a rare few Mozart pieces I'll have in my collection, such as it is!

Ironically I could have bought both in the UK! Still.....

cheers.

Re: What CDs have you bought recently?

I recently bought a CD set containing symphonies 1 through 6 of Tchaikovsky. The CDs were so damn cheap in quality that I couldn't rip some of the pieces , but then again it's just to get an overview.
And then I bought Phillip Glass' interpretation of the original Dracula film. Instrumentation is minimalistic and the music direct, something I like very much.

@reith
If you like Toru Takemitsu, but want it "more Western" you could try Akira Nishimura or someone else from the post-Takemitsu era.

I just bought,

Ben Folds Five "Whatever and Ever Amen", the re-issue with added tracks, and, something Boneman will love:

Trombonismos by the Trombones de Costa Rica. They just performed here and were unbelievable.

I've got 6 Tchaik too - 4-6 are the winners - 1-3 are kind of like Mozart symphs before the mid 30s.

I've got the universal DVD of Dracula and you can turn the Glass soundtrack on or off. I had to turn it off - too distracting!

I can only confirm that. Currently I'm in love with symphony °5. It currently steals time I should use to get some sleep

I've been looking for that DVD already but didn't find a seller/shop. Do you recall where you bought that DVD?

Yeah - you know, I knew Tchaik 4 and 6 pretty well before, and since I had not heard 5 before I bought the collection, it has had a much greater impact on me. Wonderful work.

I bought the Universal DVD of Dracula a couple of years ago at BJ's - but they were all over the place. They're probably not on shelves anymore though.

I'm sure you could find it on Amazon though.

best,
Steve

Re: What CDs have you bought recently?

I haven't bought a CD in ages.

Last one to get as gift was Daniel Barenboim's versions of Complete Piano Sonatas and Variations of Mozart.

Re: What CDs have you bought recently?

Last CD I bought other than Mitchell Zeidwig's Live and Unedited was Copland: Rodeo, Billy The Kid, Appalachian Spring. Before that I think it was some of Franz Schubert's String Quartets that were published after his death.
