Malcolm Arnold and professional composers

Sir Malcolm Arnold has just died.

I've heard a fair amount of his music including a few soundtracks. But what most strikes me is the example he set to people wanting to make a living at composition - his flexibility.

He was ready to turn his hand to any genre within reason including film, opera, ballet, many other bits and pieces along with 9 symphonies. He also taught composition and theory.

So I suppose if one hopes to be commissioned, even invited to write for different events/occasions, one should be adaptable and ready to give anything a go. My own teacher said something similar, like don't turn down any commission if you can possibly complete it.

MaestroX will become famous soon enough
I agree about never turning down a commission, or even the oppotunity to write for any genre or event. Take it as an oppotunity to learn more and become a better composer. Thats how I see it.

He was an amazing composer and I loved his work. Last year I played Four Scottish dances during a masterclass for young brass band players here(under the direction of another English Monument: Richard Evans) Damn hard, but so entertaining to play and to listen to, the second part (Vivace) with the drunk trombone is just hilarious.

I just found this rather old thread on the "similar threads" thingy but just had to reply.

I didn't realise Arnold had died - our orchestra are also playing the 4 Scottish Dances at the moment. They're great fun - and yes as prinicpal bassoon I have the humiliation of the drunken solo (last week we forgot the music so I had to play it from memory so it sounded even more ridiculous!)

Anyway I think his music is under appreciated - I especially like his Carnival of Animals: Who else would have that Bats idea?!
