Most Overplayed

What do you think the most overplayed piece is of all time?

Things such as: Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata, Pachbel:Canon in D come to mind

what do you think?

Bach's Toccata and fugue in d minor. You know the one I'm talking about...

I have a beautiful CD of E. Power Biggs playing organ, it has some of my favorite traditional organ music, but it opens with that piece and I always have to just press the skip button.

We all forgot Wagner's the ride of the valkyries. No one can listen to that piece seriously any more.

I think whats worse than an overused piece, is an overused piece used and played badly. I've heard Canon in D a million times but I like it as long as its played right i like it. Played wrong and its awful and I want to kill the violinist's. (just kidding)

Right on the nail!

I never tire of good music, if I like the work and the performance is good. What makes it unbearable, is that people often uses such pieces as showcases for themselves, and not the piece…

Unfortunately, regarding e. g. Toccata and Fugue in d minor by Bach, almost nobody plays the opening with a cool timing, understanding the balance between the heavy phrase endings and the flow: Most people overdo the heaviness, forgetting the impatience that makes music flow…

In general, classical musicians experiment far too little with timing, and when they do, they tend to overdo everything.

Regards

Mozart Clarinet Concerto - Adagio
Vivaldi Seasons
Beethoven 5th Symphony
Elgar Nimrod
Beethoven 5th Piano Conc Adagio

having said that, maybe there's a reason these Classic FM diehards are so hard to escape. They are still brilliant pieces and if they are popular to so many people, why should any one complain about them being played? Memorable pieces help people feel more at ease with classical music than if it's treated as an elitist world.

having said that, I can't stand Classic FM. I'm a Radio 3 girl myself...

Pachbel's Canon in D, I used to love that piece, but grew to hate simply because it was SO overplayed
