My Balkan Orchestra

I wasn’t sure about where to post this, but my old Balkan orchestra Balkalao (1991-2003) was interresting in that we kept the autenticity of the original music, while often being highly creative when it came to arrangements. (We also played some other Eastern European folk music.)

Here is four of my arrangements for the band:

Shota (Belly dance melody)
Aghcheekneroo Par (Armenia)
Troika (Russia)
Blagoevgradsko Horo (Bulgaria)

Svein Jakop Hansen: Clarinet and soprano saxophone
Thorolf A. Holmboe: Bass, tambura and guitar
Per Olaf Ranger: Accordeon, bouzouki, tambura and balalaika
Kari Wennemo: Accordeon
Øyvin Yri: Clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute
Jan Aasgaard: Percussion, flute and guitar

Regards

Re: My Balkan Orchestra

The second piece is beautiful. Nice arranging, I like the loud dynamics while the bed is constant. It's a tear jerker.

Re: My Balkan Orchestra

Wow very interesting. I loved them. My favourite being "Troika", I've always like Russian folk melodies. I've played a few good arrangements for concert band, most of which have some great clarinet parts

Re: My Balkan Orchestra

We got lots of jobs, yes, recorded music for dance learning videos for schools (two of the tracks Troika and
Blagoevgradsko Horo are from one of these sessions), played on national television, all the big concert halls on different occations etc etc.

Re: My Balkan Orchestra

I am not surprised especially in Norway as they like the type of music. Get them back together TAH and spread the word.
