Share your favourite music Hi everyone I've been reading the thread about "What genre are you in" and lots of different genres have been mentioned which I'm not familiar with. What about sharing clips of some of the pieces we each like, and maybe say why we like them? I like classical music but I also like New Orleans jazz and big band, maybe because I'm interested in the period of the 20s, 30s and 40s. Also the clarinet, which I'm learning, was a popular instrument in New Orleans jazz and big band. One of my favourite jazz musicians is Sidney Bechet, who started on clarinet but switched to soprano sax, apparently because it was louder and he wanted to drown out the brass! I love the sound of both clarinet and soprano sax, especially in the top register, which is probably one of the reasons why I like the sound of NO jazz. The following pieces were written and performed by Sidney Bechet and recorded in 1938: http://www.redhotjazz.com/songs/bech...ofthenight.ram http://www.redhotjazz.com/songs/bechet/whatadream.ram On the Big Band front, my favourite is Artie Shaw, who was one of the great clarinettists of the 1930s along with Benny Goodman. His rendition of Cole Porter's Begin the Beguine took the world by storm when it was released and the clip below gives a flavour of the period. The other clip is an extract from Artie Shaw's Clarinet Concerto, which is a thrilling piece of clarinet playing when heard in full on a CD (well I think so anyway!) So that's my choice - what would everyone else like to share? ![]()

Re: Share your favourite music I like both Sidney Bechet and Artie Shaw. But Artie Shaw, in my opinion, was one of the greatest ever. He wanted to play bebop and West Coast jazz when those styles were in the vogue. He even formed a band with the right players to do that kind of stuff. But people didn't want to hear Artie Shaw play Night In Tunisia. They wanted to hear him play Begin The Beguine. He gave up music because of that. That's really too bad because he played in any style well, and who knows what he would have done if he stuck to his guns and played bebop and whatever else came to mind.

Re: Share your favourite music Being quite broadminded musically, I'd find favourite genres difficult - they tend to change from day to day. It's easier to say what I regularly don't like because that's little. If I need a day away from "classical" music and need my spirits lifted, I'll probably turn to African or Caribbean song which I love immensely. Here're a couple of brief clips, the first, Caribbean, the second African about 1 min each. ![]() Reith Last edited by reith : 19-04-2007 at 11:19 PM.

Re: Share your favourite music Yes I can see how those pieces would lift spirits, Reith, and that's partly why I like New Orleans jazz - it's so upbeat. Thanks for those ![]()

Re: Share your favourite music My absolute favorite genre, recently, has to be post-rock. I guess my favorite band would either be iLiKETRAiNS or Red Sparowes.
