What Music Makes Your Skin Crawl??

This is the "inversion", so to speak, of "What is your favorite music?" or "What music makes you happy?" Which piece do you never want to hear again? Or which piece do you love to hate? And no simple answers, like "All of Phillip Glass" or "Anything written after 1850", etc.
There is one piece by Sibelius that drives me up the wall, or nearly out of my car, whenever I hear it played on a public radio station. It is the incidental music for a play, called the Karella Suite. To be fair, it is a very early work of his, Opus 11, written nearly a decade before 1900, and I love his symphonies, all of which which came later. And I don't know if the play was a comedy or something serious-- but it sounds to me like Sibelius tried too hard to finish the music and turned in something a college student might, just to get a grade. Fanfares and marches in the suite make me think the play is a serious historical drama, maybe based on Finnish history-- I've never looked it up, to be truthful. But the music rings so-- "insincerely" is the best word I can think of to describe it. The grand march has the weight of a jig (not even a good gigue!) And a slower movement sounds like a beginning church organist improvising over "stained glass chords" during a church service. In the finale, the jig theme gets the grandiose treatment- slower and louder, which increases the ridiculous effect to me. I would expect a comedian like Charlie Chaplin to march in, at this point, in drag, or something as silly. Needless to say, I would never buy a recording of it, and I hope I NEVER hear it again!
Now it's your turn!!

Re: What Music Makes Your Skin Crawl??

Mostly current chart songs based on stock chords/accompaniments, especially those who solo around on the same chord for ages...and drizzly or wailing singers who usually need pitch correction. Derivatives of the spice girls and other "product" make me reach for the on/off switch.

I recently had to do a report on the nightshift at a major supermarket, which is when shelves are replenished. They had the bl**dy radio on the whole night, every night, the same drizzly chain of songs, sometimes repeated several times. What was amusing though, was after about 2am the music was obviously meant to put the last few people still awake, to sleep...whereas these workers really need something to boost them up a bit.

Re: What Music Makes Your Skin Crawl??

hmmmmmmmm well first of all.. generic rap songs...
then... talentless screaming death metal....
then.. mozart.. I can't stand his piano music... it's so... boring..
his orchestral works are another matter altogether. But his piano sonatas really do make my skin crawl.
Then there's all the fugues etc of Bach, they are so monotonous...
other music that makes my skin crawl are bands like mcfly etc and all the generic pop bands.

To be honest though, I can see why other people like these types of music.
Rap songs are just like to be heard in the background, they go with the general mood of the people who listen to it. It's all about the mood.

Death metal.. again.. about the mood, most likely is awesome hearing it in a concert, feeling the beat inside of you, the adrenaline of it alll
then mozart.. well.. his piano sonatas, if they were playing in like.. some dinner party then perhaps they would sound alright.
bachs fugues do sound good listening to them but I can't stand learning how to play them that's all.
mcfly etc is good for.. a kinda laid back bubbly mood I guess.. I'm not sure.

Vivaldi's Seasons. There's something about it that I hate.
A lot of Grindcore I don't like. I mean, I like Napalm Death, but Grindcore's a genre that you're either amazing or really bad, and people think it's easy to be as good as Napalm Death, so there are an abundance of bad bands in the genre.

Some rap I don't like, but there's a lot of really good rap out there, like Skoch Tape. I basically hate mainstream rap right now.

Most "popular" music. (I liked country until it was sissified into rocklite.) Delius, twelve tone, the current choral style from the US military academies (overly thick harmonies without the bite of barbershop.)

I can understand why you don't like Death Metal, it's not my favourite kind of music either, but to say it's talentless? In my experience, it's very technical and very fast, and to play, I can imagine it's a nightmare!! It's hard enough playing as an ensemble, but when the drummer is going a hundred miles and hour it's hard to keep in time
Just my opinion anyway.

There's quite a few moments in Handel's Messiah that make my skin crawl, but in my case it's a good thing

Fur elise for one, but everybody who is a real musician hates that.

I really loathe metamorphoses by Richard Strauss. Definitely one of the most boring pieces ever. "More to come"

Re: What Music Makes Your Skin Crawl??

None, really.

Music falls into three categories for me:
• Music that contains elements that I like, must have ideas, form is secondary.
• Music that contains no elements that I like but is well composed.
• Music that contains no elements that I like and isn’t even well composed.

I’m ok with the first one. For the other two, it really doesn’t speak to me, and leaves me indifferent. I just don’t listen to it.

Regards
