Routing Sibelius 4 to Cubase SX3

Hi everybody,

After a long break I fired up Sibelius 4 and Cubase SX3 with the aim that I'd try to compose something. Unfortunately I ran into a problem right away. What I'd like to do is route Sibelius's midi-out to Cubase's midi-in, so that I'd be able to use Kontakt 2 and other VSTis for playback when working in Sibelius. I've heard that this is possible, and I almost got it to work. The problem, however, is that Cubase or Sibelius doesn't seem to play each instrument channel separately, but all at the same time when only one instrument should be playing. Eg. if I have a violin and a piano track in Sibelius, and notes just on the piano track, I get both violin and piano sound when Sibelius plays the notes that are meant to be played by the piano.

I use MIDI Yoke NT as a virtual router between the programs. In Sibelius, I select MIDI Yoke NT 1 as the output device, and then in Cubase SX I select the same device as an input device. All works well as long as I setup just one instrument sound in Cubase. But if I load for example a violin and a piano sound into Kontakt2 VST in Cubase by creating two separate midi tracks for them in the sequencer, select MIDI Yoke NT 1 as the input device for both tracks and Kontakt 2 as the output, and finally set both instruments' channels to 1 & 2 in Cubase and Kontakt, I get both of the sounds playing at the same time when I enter notes to either instrument track in Sibelius. I've made sure that Sibelius's mixer has the correct playback device (MIDI Yoke 1) and the correct channels on each instrument.

Somehow I remember to have had this thing working previously. I've most likely forgotten how to set it up.

Thanks,
crimson

Re: Routing Sibelius 4 to Cubase SX3

I've just thought. if you just want to use VST's or samplers with Sibelius you could use Steinberg's V-Stack to host them and route the midi with Midi Yoke as you've been doing. Using V-Stack would probably free up alot of system resources if your using any big libraries.

Soon we won't have to worry about this routing buisness as Sibelius 5 should fully support VST's
