Is it okay to post music here that is an arrangement of a new piece for the members to listen to?

Re: Copyright

Have you gained the rights of the original composer to create an arrangement of the work?

If not its best to ask them.

Re: Copyright

Surely it is okay to arrange for pleasure and not profit?

Re: Copyright

If it stays in the drawer, yes.

For everything else, you’d better follow regular procedure…

The Creative Commons Movement simplifies all such questions, so that works released under CC licenses are generally open to non-profit usage, as long as the original author is credited.

Re: Copyright

You may not arrange any music that is still protected by the mickey mouse law. Even for pleasure or non-profit. You have to get permission of the composer/his publisher or license-holder. You can't put a note of music on paper before that.

But surely if it is only used as an exercise then it is okay? I have applied to a few publishers for permission but they have not even got back to me!

Re: Copyright

I'm sure if you were arranging in the comfort of your own home and the arrangement wasn't performed for profit then you'd be ok.

Its a tricky buisness thought copyright these days.
