Do you have that too? Hello guys, It's been a while since I last entered something in here and in fact it's been a while since I last wrote a note on a piece of paper as well. I guess the usual things (work, household, all the other "daily" stuff) got in the way and absorbed my energy or something. I had a bit of vacation now and am back on my normal energy level, but.... the music is not back (yet) ? I've started a few bars of music but can't seem to grasp the fever back that I had, writing in the evening hours because all those ideas wanted testing, the urge to complete what I had started because it kept playing in my head... I still enjoy music, listening to it, listening to my own stuff as well, practicing the piano playing, all the same things I did... so that can't be it. Apparently the writing was also connected to coming here a lot as I shamefully must admit I've been too quiet lately (sorry for that). Do you/did you have this kind of experience too?? greetings, Peter

Re: Do you have that too? Very much so Peter, once my time gets occupied with the other troubles of life its hard to find the time to do my music and soon it gets harder and harder to come up with anything when time is available. I guess its just one of them things. A thing that troubles me is not having another hours in the day to do everything! I would love to be able to go without sleep, I'd get so much more done! A possible remedy (it worked for me at the weekend), try find the reason that you began composing and revist that music, it should give you the feeling that you've longed to feel again ![]()

Re: Do you have that too? Hey Peter, Yeah, the well dries up at times - and sometimes at the most inopportune moments. I've found forcing it doesn't help and make everything I create seem substandard and forced. Going out, playing video games, doing chores, exercising or even listening to totally different music styles seems to help getting back on track. I'm starting to believe in this body and mind cycle thing as it seems to happen like that - regular ebbs and flows. Odd...

Re: Do you have that too? I think this is the same thing that troubles me at times (or quite often really). Like chckn8r said, it feels like the well dries up. I find it rather annoying, but I can't help it. Usually when this happens, I need to do something different from composing and music. I might have a try at one of my other hobbies and see if I can find the 'fire' to do them. Strangely for the past two weeks I seem to have run out of energy for most of my hobbies. Nothing has really caught up, and it's been rather boring. Usually I do my hobbies in these kind of cycles that last for maybe one month before I run out of energy for that hobby. When that happens, I generally wait for another inspiration which almost always concerns another hobby. I have about five hobbies (four of which are creative) that go through this cycle in a random order. I hope you get back on track after a while, PeterG!

Re: Do you have that too? I think its something every artisit runs into some times. The inspiration will sometimes just dry up. Usually I try to do somthing else, walk the dog for example. Being away from the subject at hand tends to leave my mind free and usually gives me some inspiration.

Re: Do you have that too? Peter - indeed, but it's less that the whole thing dries up than I get weary of a particular idiom hence my pieces tend to be short. I recently started some song settings which, from the affect of the words, would be semi-atonal (acutely chromatic). So I'm halfway through the third and I have a distinct need to go tonal. But I know me - I'll go tonal for a while then get fed up and start reverting to chromaticism and beyond. Same with this sinfonietta thing - it'll take ages to complete...because my heart isn't in it at the mo. I'm ok if briefed to do a particular style but I have to be ready to turn elsewhere if things start to go astray, to keep on track with the main bit. Sometimes things dry up but it helps not being employed in music - music is a bit of an escape, just as work is from music! As long as every day is different (or almost), I'm ok!

Re: Do you have that too? Hi All, thanks for all your comments. It's comforting to know these things happen to all of us. I'm still struggling a bit to get out of it but have more confidence now that it may come back on it's own.. kind regards, Peter

Re: Do you have that too? Happened to me now, as I thought it would sooner or later. I put my pencil down a few days ago and knew "that's that"! Maybe it's the warm weather, the call of the open road (not that you have many of those in the UK) or just the prospect of a holiday but I looked at the pile of music paper and thought "Did I write all that stuff?" It'll pass, I know - far from the first time (and a good reason why I never tried too hard to go 100% professional) so I just have to wait around a few weeks for that holiday! Peter, don't struggle too hard - that may make it worse! Just take it easy...recharge! reith
