| Happy Canada Day It's Canada's "birthday" today. Wear your red and white, grab a Molson Canadian, don a toque and let out the inner Canuck in you. |

| Re: Happy Canada Day Happy Canada Day! ![]() I've visited canada twice so far and I love it. The only annoying thing is when shopping you have to add on the tax yourself so you don't get a nasty surprise when you get to the checkout ![]() |

![]() We had some totally massive fireworks in a park near my house. It was one of the biggest fireworks displays I've ever seen. Amazing. ![]()

| Re: Happy Canada Day If Al Gore is right, then it would be smart to buy up some land up there now. It will be a garden spot in the future--if any humans survive the impending catastrophe (That is, if you actually believe Al Gore). |

| Re: Happy Canada Day ![]()
Then there are the many huge mining company takeovers (Alcan just a few weeks ago) which put Canada's mineral wealth under control of US corporations. Forestry companies are now mostly American. The corporations are now trying to get control of Canadian water - buying up springs and lakes (or just selling Canadian tap water like Coke & Pepsi did with Dasani and Aquafina). The Canadian government is too weak (spineless) to stand up to pressure from big business and eventually the whole damn country will be foreign owned. But this is getting depressing and this thread is supposed to be about "Happy Canada Day". ![]() |

| Re: Happy Canada Day Having been born in Canada, I have a strong affection for it, even though I live in the US (with dual citizenship). It’s just too cold for me (for now). It would be nice to think that a country like Canada can maintain its character and identity, while slowly improving, but the whole nature of all countries are changing. Businesses are more and more transparent to borders. Many US companies are also foreign-owned. You might say that the country is really made up of its culture and people. But even that is fluid these days with various types of immigration, both legal and illegal. In the US, there are many who want to add 20 million or so “instant citizens,” which would have a dramatic affect on the make-up or identify of the country, especially politically. With talk of a European Super State, spanning a very diverse set of cultures, peoples, and languages, the idea of a country is less clear. Some also want a North American Union with Canada, US, and Mexico. I can actually see this happening if Mexico can actually get past its internal corruption and reach its economic potential. Anyway, enough rambling for now; I do wish Canada a Happy Canada Day for as long as such a holiday makes sense. |
