Electric Guitar Concerto in Eb minor (Yngwie Malmsteen and New Japanese Philiharmonic

All right, here is a video that before you watch it, know that I ONLY listen to Yngwie Malmsteen's pieces from this collection of performances with the Philiharmonic.

I know alot of you here are Classically inclinced, as am I, but I would honestly like to know what the lot of you think of this very interesting combo. I realize the solos he performs are WAY overdone, but overall this is a great performance IMO

Hope you enjoy!

EDIT: if this is in the wrong forum please move

Great links! I really enjoy a lot of what he does. At times I did find the chorus a bit cheesey, though.

Most of the guitar part was pretty cool, but the chorus was absolutely out of place and totally cheesified the whole thing.

Re: Electric Guitar Concerto in Eb minor (Yngwie Malmsteen and New Japanese Philiharm

I thought the beginning of "fugue" had Yngwie playing over the orchestra instead of with it. However, after a minute or so, the piece seem to settle down and he was playing with them. This made the sound of the guitar and orchestra an interesting and fun combination.

He sure can play, but my favorite contemporary guitarist is still Steve Morse:

Now there's something I've only seen once before, he's actually using his left hand thumb to fret notes on the neck. Pretty cool

He's an exceedingly good player, love him or loathe him, considering he was committed to bringing Paganini-styled playing to the electric guitar. I had a recording of that concerto and recently sold it to cut back on my CD collection!

My faviourite is his Trilogy Op 5. He's playing it on the "Trial by Fire" video (live in Leningrad). That's some playing!

Wow! That Steve Morse guy is really nice! I wonder why I've never heard of him before.

Aha! You say you've never seen Jimi Hendrix play before? I think he's the one who started this, though he used it quite differently, brining the thmb over the top and not from the bottom. I've used it before like Morse used it, that is, only slightly touching the strings to produce overtones.

Steve Morse has actually been around for a while. He is a very versatile performer/composer. He formed the instrumental band the Dixie Dregs back in the 70s. I caught a couple of their shows in the small clubs around LA. They were fantastic. He then went solo (Steve Morse Band) and is now tooling around with Deep Purple, of all groups (it’s a gig, I guess). He’s also done some duet concerts with classical guitarist Manual Barrenco and still manages some short tours with his solo band or even the Dregs.
[sorry for the blatant fan worshipping]

Also, I forgot to mention that Steve Morse was won the Guitar Player magazine's readers poll for Best Overall Guitarist five years in a row (he is no longer eligible).
