BBC Proms Young Composers Competition 2007

Anyone aged 12 – 18 can enter the BBC Proms Young Composers’ Competition. They accept any kind of music: the only condition is that you must be able to write it down in fully scored musical notation, because someone else will perform it if you get through to the final.

The original winning compositions will be performed at the BBC Proms/The Guardian Young Composers’ Concert and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The winning composers will also receive a commission to be performed and recorded by BBC musicians at the 2008 BBC Proms Composer Labs. You’ll work with top composers and musicians in a series of workshops to develop your commission.

All competition entrants are also invited to come to London and attend the Inspire Day on 17 August 2007. This is your opportunity to meet professional composers and musicians, other young composers like yourself, and key music industry people. Come and see how they make music, show them how you make music, and make music together. You’ll hear the winning compositions in the Young Composers’ Concert, as well as being given two free tickets for the BBC Proms concert that evening in the Royal Albert Hall. To top it all off, the whole day is free!

Re: BBC Proms Young Composers Competition 2007

I had a go last year but I was unsuccessful I entered my Divertente Divertimento Per Orchestra. I got the feeling they were looking for modern pieces, which my Divertente was not. Better luck this year though. I've got a chocie of couple of things i'm working on. I'll keep you guys posted on how i'm getting on with it.

Anyone else going to be entering? The compeition is UK only though

Nice. Alas I'm a little beyond 18 now so I won't be on it. There's still this 'taint' of the BBC preferring modern works. There was a time when you'd get nowhere if the piece wasn't serial, accompanied by loads of program notes.

So...good luck to you!
