| Hi, I just wanted to get a sense of what the general genres that people at Music-Webs compose. Choose two genres (unless you do only one!).

| Re: What is your main style? (choose two) I'm afraid it's more than two but all in the contemporary sphere. I have been asked to write in 18th century styles for specific projects though music that I'd call my deeper expression, personal stuff? is always modern. Not atonal it usually contains dissonances and pays scant attention to matters of key and metre. I suppose I write intuitively rather than to a system but if something serial suggests itself, I'll use it. I also turn to "light music" on occasion, particularly if a more intense work has given me a headache, sweat and tears. I've always advocated young composers learning to write in different styles so they can respond to any commission or invitation. Much of the craft of traditional music has been lost in the melee of contemporary composition which does seem a bit of a mishmash these days. No problem for those who like that sort of thing but anyone wishing to appeal to a wider audience will have to learn traditional techniques and work from there forward. Another point is to work within the scope of resources likely to be at composers' disposal. The chance of a new composer securing performances of vast orchestral works is incredibly small so it's best to work with a smaller ensemble and/or electronic media. If you can set up of play in an ensemble you can "put your music around" fairly easily. |

| Re: What is your main style? (choose two) Just business; having to take a new contract prematurely to make sure I had continuity of work (especially as it's winter - one doesn't want to be relaxing and taking time out in THIS sort of winter). |

| Re: What is your main style? (choose two) Maybe I'm too much of an engineer / techy / nerd, but has anyone added the percentages of the poll? Aren't they supposed to add up to 100%? |

| Re: What is your main style? (choose two) Not if the instructions are to choose two answers. In that case, the percentages add up to 200% if everyone actually makes two choices. |

Though I will say I still write largely with noteheads for traditional pitched instruments, so it's probably closest to early 20th century pandiatonicism (though I'm more chromatic, and also use minimalistic elements - as well as popular music influences). Steve |
