What's an impressive song?

I want to learn a song that's impressive and allows room to show off! Any suggestions?

Re: What's an impressive song?

Bob Will's "San Antonio Rose" (1939) is good.

"Play on Notes" by Milton Babbitt. Nobody will like the way it sounds, but it will really show off your musicianship (that is, if you can do it).

Sorry if you were asking for a song that will show off your singing ability.

“Spain” by Chick Corea.

If you can pull that one off with ease, as well as musicality, you can sing!

Regards

Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix, nothing too technical, but a lovely piece. I also play Rondo Alla Turca or Bach's Badinerie, though I don't play them very well. You could sing Mozart's Aria from Queen of the Night or whatever it's called.

Re: What's an impressive song?

Mozart's "Exsultate Jubalate" is good if you're a soprano. It may be hard to find a backup band though on short notice.

Re: What's an impressive song?

Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# Minor is quite the impressive piece. It's fairly easy to play (once you learn the notes) as it's a lot of patterns. You do have to have some pretty big hands and stamina to play the chords tho.

It depends how difficult and melifluous you want it. Some famous operatic arias come to mind like Una Voce poco Fa from The Barber; the Shadow Dance from Dinorah, Ardon gli incensi from Lucia, that tend to be sort-of vocal concertos. Range doesn't come into it, your accompanist should be able to transpose them down, they're very diatonic but pretty demanding.

But for something lyrical? Un Bel Di Vredemo (La Boehme)?
In Questa Reggia (Turandot)

Edit: Sorry, seems that the Villa-Lobos score is only available for hire or something. Still worth a listen but I edited out some of the links. Can't believe it - almost none of his scores are easily available...

Or something simple and beautiful. I'll see if I can locate the score for this, a Love Song by Villa-Lobos. This sample is a bit low-fi, for mezzo and piano though a guitar version exists somewhere.

Scroll down to "Forest of the Amazon - Love Song".

But there are so many songs.... If you like pop songs or Schubert, the world's your oyster.

What do I play to impress? "Chopsticks" when I can get it right.

Thanks for looking into it for me, that song sounds lovely, and I can always put it up a key or two.

Hehe chopsticks is about the only thing I can play on the piano!

Everyone seems to have some pretty cool impressive pieces and I really appreciate all your suggestions!! :-)
