trying to learn how to sing

any rock solid tips? i want to become a versatile singer, with a wide range of pitches and tones. how does one learn the techniques of singing without paying to goto lessons?

Unfortunately, the technical aspects of singing can't be taught from a book (or website). It has to do with the fact that the instrument is your body, and you are simply too close to it to be objective. Even the best singers in the world have teachers and coaches that can assess their issues and address them. You need a good, real-live teacher.

Other aspects of singing that have to do with musicianship i.e., solfege, theory, etc. can be studied without a teacher. I hesitate to include languages and diction because those are also things that a second party should listen to.
