sing 3rd or 5th

I have seen some people can sing backup vocal in upper 3rd or 5th or lower 3rd instantly and beautifully when other people is singing main vocal.
I find it very difficult because i will follow the main vocal.
How can they do it?

i) practice and concentrating on your independence. Record just a few notes (maybe 2 or 3 at first) on whatever you use, doesn't have to be sung, any instrument close to the pitch of your voice will do. Sing 5ths against it.

Sing both above and below (you may have to re-record to do both, depends on your range). Expand the length of the phrase.

ii) cheat and use a harmonizer!

Tell you this - it's harder singing a semitone out than a fifth.

Thanks for the idea. I never thought of it before. I think it is very useful in music arrangement.
