I used to play the recorder when I was younger, which I assume was the same for everyone else as it is a good instrument to start with.

It was probably introduced into primary schools because it's easy to get at least some result fairly quickly - everyone knows DBB---CAA---GABCDDD.

But to play it well at diploma standard is very difficult, I'm told.

Absolutely! I have taught to Grade 8. But the music these days is so diverse. It even inspired me to write a few things for the instrument.
