Viola (not very well. About grade 6). I actually took it up because there were no violas in the school orchestra and I received the instrument as a bequest, not realising it would stand me in stead later. If any one thing has helped me get simpler orchestral works performed it's belonging to local orchestras. Perhaps even more (now I think back) because conductors of these orchestras make an effort to keep viola players as there aren't many of us about!

Also play oboe (less interested now because of the maintenance costs and bloomin' perennial reed problems) and piano (grade 8 but only just....sheesh, if I remember, I got 102).

It’s an early synthesizer, original version from the 1920’s. Incorporated into the symphony orchestra by, most notably, Olivier Messiaen, who regularly used it in his big orchestral works, partly due to the fact that his sister in law was a main Ondes Martenot performer.

A great sounding instrument!

Regards

I've heard the piece Olivier Messiaen wrote with the ondes martenot in it. I can't remember the piece name but its a very strange and intriguing sound. Anybody know the name?

You are most certainly referring to “Turangalîla-symphonie” (1946-1948 ), which is the most famous work he used it in. However the complete list of works by Olivier Messiaen featuring ondes martenot looks like this:

• Fête des belles eaux for six ondes martenot, 1937
• Turangalila-symphonie for piano, ondes martenot, and orchestra, 1946-1948

Ahh yeah, the "Turangalîla-symphonie" was what i was referring to. The other works look interesting, i'll have to check them out. Do you happen to know if there is a CD collection or set with some of these on?

^ if it’s the instrument you’re after, you could check out http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item...._code=8.555779

cheap one.

But reading the score to “Turangalîa” alongside with the listening, is very educational on many levels.
