Coloratura...

I don't suppose many will be interested in this subject, still - friend and myself have been listening to some operatic bleedn chunks this evening. We both love Rossini and Donizetti but there the similarity ends because he goes on with Verdi where I turn to Berg.

One thing I love is the coloratura soprano. We played a reissue of a 78 by Luiza Tetrazzini singing "Una Voce poco Fa" from the Barber and some other stuff and it made me realise just how drizzly the more modern operatic arias and singers are - the sort you get on a free CD with the Mail on Sunday - 20 best arias - singers who wail their souls out, load of emotion, portamento and exaggerated tremolo. The agility, accuracy and lightness of the old bel canto singers has gone. Nobody bothers to train like Adelina Patti, Melba, Tetrazzini any more. Beverly Sills was about the last (and one of the warmest, most dramatic Lucias I've ever heard). I read a report about how Tetrazzini would sing said aria ending on the high E flat, holding it for about a minute then walked off the stage still singing. She was a large lady and a fan once said "I wish I had your voice." She replied something like "I wish I had your figure. Some have the voice, some the figure!"

Does anyone else like this era of "vocal gymnastics"?

Re: Coloratura...

If you think those days are interesting you should read about what singers could do with their voices in the early days of opera. Supposedly, their vocsl mastery has never been exceeded.
