Score?

Ok, so I have been a member here for almost a month... and I have yet to see a score for any pieces...

I am sorry, but I can't review a piece well if I don't have a score to accompany the sound... so, if you wonder why I am not reviewing your piece, it is because you have no score.

Don't worry, I am not leaving... just not reviewing.

I think everyone's got their own reasons for not posting a score, I'm sure some do, I tried to post the scores to several of my pieces but I couldn't get them to upload. But reviewing only with a score is kind of limiting, you could still leave comments on what you heard, but I agree in the sense that it is easier to give an in depth review with a score, but don't review simply because they don't have a score

Besides, music is essentially the organization of sound or sound perceived as art. Scores are only symbolic and doesn't truly reflect the music.

But a lot of the music posted here is nothing but crude MIDI renderings of scores… I understand Morivou’s concern very well, but not seeing *any* scores is not really right, I’ve seen quite a few here.

I work as a conductor, and know the vast distance between a good idea, and a useful score. This means I am used to assess scores without actually reading every chord out of it, but looking at structures, lines, expressions, and I can usually tell in a blink how the musicians will react to the sheets. Therefore, I always want to see the scores to be able to help with scoring basics, which is eventually what makes your music sink or swim, in performances in the real world of musicians and conductors.

You have a point there :-) If it wasn't for a notation program, I probably wouldn't be a composer! My handwriting is horrendous It is important to have a score that a performer understands.

There are problems - not insurmountable. I still like to handwrite orchestral scores which means the paper is too big for an A4 scanner. I can work around that and make up a pdf in photoshop. Except I can't find a way to create separate pages and it ends up as one very long page! If anyone knows of any legit software to do multi-page pdfs, please tell me! Okay, I don't want to pay a lot because I'd only use it with this application (i.e. about 3 -4 times a year).

Still, it's no fun (for me) reading a full score of more than about 10 staves on computer while listening so for here, I'd prepare an annotated short score - more manageable. A final comment about that - I'm happy to put in the work but if no one bothers to look at it, it's effort spent for nothing. One has to be practical! (Of course, I do write up a full score in most cases, definitely when anticipating submission)
