To laugh at the full moon

And another one! I think I am overdoing my stay here by posting so many pieces. But it is nice to have a place to showcase your music, I am very thankful for that!

To laugh at the full moon is a work for solo voice and ensemble, although I am working on an orchestral version for it. Will still take a while though for that one is finished.

The oboe plays the vocal part, and the recording is made on my mac, so the performance is not brilliant.

because the file is to big for this forum, I divided it into 4 parts on my own site. Here are the links:

part 1: http://www.freewebs.com/andreasvanharen/moon%20part%201.mp3
part 2: http://www.freewebs.com/andreasvanharen/moon%20part%202.mp3
part 3: http://www.freewebs.com/andreasvanharen/moon%20part%203.mp3
part 4: http://www.freewebs.com/andreasvanharen/moon%20part%204.mp3

I am also working on an intro for this piece, which is not finished yet, but here is the first sketch:
Intro

I attached however the score in pdf format with this mail.

I was never able to find the poet who wrote this beautiful poem, maybe some here knows?

greetings!
André, Sweden

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Sorry about this, André - is it me doing something weird? I click on your links and get led back to this very thread.

There's quite a lot there so I may have to listen to it over today/tomorrow, if I can get to the music.

After a quick glance at the first couple of score pages, I'd surely like to hear the work.

cheers,
reith

Hi Reith
sorry for this, I just noticed the same problem. However, if you copy the link location and past it in the browsers address bar, it will open normally.

Hope this works for you as well,

thanks for listening,

André

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Hi André,

I'm back in the land of the living right now; tried to get to these files as you suggested but the pages can't be found. I hope to have more time this week so if you can refresh at least a couple of them I'd like to hear them.

cheers,
R

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Hi Reith,
I finally was able to fix this problem. I also put an new intro as separate link with it. I have to put it together still. Hope it will work for you as well now. Sorry for this problem. The changes are made in the first original post.

greetings,
André

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Listening to the first two. Great - easy to listen to. Excellent composition. You have a knack with timing/balance between episodes. Altogether a lovely work. The changes of tempo (and the rhythmic changes they seem to carry, as far as I can discern them on this rendering) are most engaging. And nice modulations.

My only problem - and this is minor - is with the rendering - the woodwind seem very forward (particularly the cor anglais). This may be the effect you want but they tend to drown out the strings. It noticed in the second file when the strings carry a pizz rhythm. I'm thinking about: 0'39" to 1'40", this rhythm is almost lost behind the winds. But it's a light, easy-going rhythm and if you decide it needs more presence then fade the winds down a bit rather than making the strings louder.....but all this is the mechanics of midi, I'm guessing, not your composition.

Very nice, André - I'll try to listen to the remainder later today! Looking forward to it.

cheers,
reith

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Thanks Reith for taking the time. The piece is long. I also added an intro to this piece. I put it at the bend of the first post.

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Ok, now had a chance to hear file 3. Live, this will sound beautiful - mysterious and intense in a simmering sort of way - I've heard other of your works recorded live so I can tell! engaging harmony - some nice doublings just after the mood change.

File 4. The harmony got a bit static between about 0'30" and 1'08".....but I'm listening to this file in isolation. I had hoped for some kind of climax in a work this length and I wasn't too sure about the closing cadence but that's purely personal opinion.

But it's altogether a nice work. So, congratulations - and I'd love to hear a live performance because the strings and their harmonies would be clearer.

Most enjoyable listening.

Re: To laugh at the full moon

Thanks for taking the time, Reith, I know it is a long piece! I would love to hear it by real players as well and will look for them as soon I finished the rewrite.
