Hi there,

some days ago I walked around in the forests around my home town and made some photos. Inspired by these pictures I also composed a piece called "Eifgen Dale at Dawn". I uploaded it to youtube. You may watch it there if you want:

Hi Dustin.

I have a couple of suggestions:

1. The music sounds great, except for the drums - they sound "cheesy MIDI" drums. I've found with drums (and synths in general) the best thing to do is use a sound that either is very realistic, or one that's obviously not realistic. If you don't have access to more realistic drum sounds, you might consider using a different patch - one that sounds even more artificial - it doesn't have to be a hip-hop kit or anything. But you might try some ethnic instruments or other percussion, rather than the "boom-chick" of a regular drum kit.

In fact, I question whether you even NEED drums or not! Sometimes, in pieces like this, it sounds like you just put the drums in because you felt like you thought you needed to put drums in to adhere to some sort of standard. I would try it without drums, or, let the drums lay out occaisionally.

But if you do keep them, or any part of them in there, you really need to look for a "less cheesy" sound. It's OK, but it sounds like it was created on a Casio, not something professional - and the rest of the material is professional looking and sounding.

2. The bird tweets. They get kind of distracting. Beginning, OK. End, OK. If the music comes to a rest in the middle, OK. But they come in kind of randomly seeming and it's kind of well, annoying.

Overall, it's very nice. So I hope you accept this criticism in the spirit in which it was intended - constructively.

Hi Steve, you're suggestions are very welcome. The drums are awful, I know. I use Synthfont plus the Merlin library (sf2), but I think the drums are essential. So which other drum sequencer should I use?

I agree with Steve on this one. Okay so you want to keep the drums, please shoot the cymbal player!!

Nice sort of celtic piece, would go well on one of those mood music cd's.

Are you doing this within Finale or Sibelius, or are you exporting the MIDI to a sequencing program?

I'm using Capella (a German notation program) to export midi files, after that I record that file with Synthfont plus a sf2 library like Merlin.

Nice work. I personally don't mind the birds effects at all. The drums may not be the best but I like them as well. Perhaps if you consider the material you assigned to the drums it might help.

Musically speaking, I think some moments of musical contrast would have added a more profound level of appreciation and even depth to the entire work. The music itself is very enjoyable but I think you could consider creating other music moments of highs and lows that describe the beauty of the land without destroying the continuity of the musical work.

I really enjoyed this.
