Quartet for Trombones

Is this a first for the forum?

Boneman, you could get Bones Apart to play this. Are they still together? They'd probably take the tempo up about 35 beats or so.

Forget the aftershave, it's an excellent piece - I love the moody opening harmonies, sensuous in a way. I've heard some Bill Russo in a similar vein. The occasional triplets add something to the flow.
The faster section builds up nicely - remarkably good for midi, with the accents and the harmony (a bit clever, that!) sounding clear. All in all you've showcased how well brass can articulate. Except can trombones really play that low (as at 2:18).

Very easy to listen to. Nice.
Reith.

Well thank you! Bass trombones can go really low.

I like this piece. It's a simple slow-fast structure, but the writing is good. The harmonies are easy on the ears but not too simple.

Just one comment: the melodic motif that comes in at 1:40 and then completely takes over from 2:05 repeats a bit much. If you develop that into a longer melody, as kind of a glorious crowning of the piece, then it would be perfect.

Put it on a web site, and see who picks it up. Or go to a music school and see if a trombone teacher wants to use it for a student recital.

Victor.

Thanks for listening to it Victor. I will have to try one of those web sites that you can upload midi files to.

Reith.

As a "bone" player myself I will answer YES- even a Tenor bone with a trigger should be able to play this - especially a large bore tenor to carry over well.
Footnote: A TRUE Bass bone (with the double rotors- and a good player) should be able to play anything that a contrabassoon can (at pitch- actually down to the F below the contrabassoon's range) A contrabass trombone (rarely found) can stretch even further (at least a 5th lower) though they are not typically agile in that register- I have heard one (my professor in school- bounces quiet agilely in that area- but he gets paid megabucks to do so- I dont and wouldnt dare attempt it).

Bones Apart just played at my University a couple of months ago so yes - still together as far as I know.

This coming semester we've got Trombones de Costa Rica coming in.
