Minuet-ette

This is nothing like that jungle music!
But listening now, I can't believe I haven't plagiarised it. So if anyone can identify it I'll happily scrap it, else it'll end up as part of a suite being put together!

Not a true minuet as it has no trio and the reprise A-theme is repeated twice which I understand doesn't happen in minuets.

scoring: flute oboe clarinet and strings.

Happy Christmas all!

Hang the form! A lovely piece. I have been listening to your mp3 pages, do you ever get your music performed at all?

I'm with Boneman, To the gallows with the form!

A very lovely piece, sort of reminescent of books like The Secret Garden, The Good Earth etc...

I have nothing bad to say about it except at times the strings seemed to be a little setback. But other than that, wonderful piece!

Nice one Reith, one of my favourite of yours so far.

I really like your writing for the woodwind, I'm a big fan of good woodwind writing and have done alot myself and you've done an excellent job. The oboe and clarinet and flutes phrases are beautiful yet melancholy.

Superb!

Thanks for the encouraging comments. I'll change the strings in the end bit - they sound a bit Mantovani-y at one point!

Thanks for that! Yes, across time I've had things performed. I play (fairly badly!) locally so I keep in touch with things; have a little ensemble, etc.
I only started using a sequencer/samples in April (as a result of having to travel around but wanting to keep up music) - it's been quite an education wrestling with the limitations of the software and finding that much can't be done. Ah well, we try - with sensitive/sensible "orchestration", like, not cheating, it's better than a piano try-out alone.
I could comment similarly on what I've heard of your work - it's very easy to listen to.

I am really lucky in being a conductor of a 40 piece wind band and 32 piece light orchestra. Plus I have access to a lot of ensembles at a music school who do not mind playing my stuff.

That's great - but hard work unless you have some willing assistants. Even with a group varying between 6 and 9 organising gigs, hasty rearrangement if someone's ill, getting rehearsals done and making sure your electrical stuff conformed with the safety regulations and there was a power-outlet within...sheesh, you know what I mean... a right headache at times. Worthwhile, of course, and I'll probably do it all again if and when the job settles and I get enough time.

Students are so lucky really - not having to pay the rates/Council tax/energy bills, work etc etc - those at home not having to worry where the next meal is coming from, not even having to shop for the food most times - and with time to practice an instrument as well... those were the days!

Bests for the coming year!
Reith

I have those as well. The Orchestra have a committe that does all the gig organising etc. The wind band is administered through a county music service.
