Two Fugues

Hi!
What do you think of these little fugues? I wrote them half a year ago when i was studying a lot of bach, along with several other fugues. However, these are the ones i am most content with, though i dont think they are keeping up the listeners interest very well...

I would appreciate any comments or thoughts about them!

The first one is in Eb-major and the second one is in a minor, and they are both four-part. I considered using the harpsicord sound for them but the midi harpsichord sounded HORRIBLE!

Re: Two Fugues

Hello Marsmellows,

Indeed very Bachian sound. I like them. Nice harmonics.
In the first one (the one in Es) I thought that, specially in the first part, the theme get's lost a bit when the other voices come in and I think that has to do with all the notes of the second part of the theme and the fact that they are not coming back in the other voices on the same place? When you start the theme again it's already better. The sudden change close to the end I liked very much.

In the second one I like the theme very much. It got me humming it and varying on it.

Both pieces can use a little “twist”, a change of theme, a mood swing,…. Something, somewhere in the middle to get attention and then you can go back to the original theme to close up. This, I think, will make them keep the listeners attention even better.

All ‘n all I enjoyed listening to them and got me thinking of making something like that too….

Thanks,

Peter

Re: Two Fugues

Hi there Marsmellows!

Good to hear some of your pieces, I was pleasently surprised. Both very well done for your age My favourite being your second (Fuga2).

Overall your use counterpoint is very good, in my opinion better in the second as it flowed better, and you also managed to utilise part of the circle of 5ths progression, which definalty gives it that baroque edge.

You should check out the: "How to write a Fugue" article we have. It might give you some more ideas
