For me it usually means just booting up fruity loops; preliminary step(s?) to that is just trying to get an atmosphere (f)or a story into my mind; once my emotions come along with that the music basically writes itself.

Other than that, I just write what sounds nice (and harmonic! o.o) ^_^

P.S.
In case you're wondering where I've been, my connection is down atm, so I'm posting from another computer right now, so um.... Well, I hope I'll be seeing you soon again.

I write everywhere... on my guitar, at the piano, while I'm walking. I always get hit with inspiration when I have something to do and then I forget afterwards. I hate that feeling that something good has past! >_<

MaestroX will become famous soon enough
I try to spend most of my time in work in my own world thinking of new things to write and thinking about some great pieces. It passes the time

I normally like to start with a chord progression and then fit a melody to it - but I'm writing a song for Grade Four Composition and I already have the words (a poem) and the melody just appeared from nowhere and had to be written down quickly. Now I'll need to find a chord progrssion to fit...

Why not just a contrasting bassline? Implicit chords are often just as strong as explicit ones, and sometimes more interresting

Absolutely Thorolf! I have used that in a piece just a solo instrument and bass line, it leaves something to the imagination.

Well I don't necessarily use all the notes form a chord! - it's just a framework.

Like all things in life leave something to the imagination and the interest will be maintained.

....one is tempted....

but one desists to preserve decorum....

no harm to say (re inspired pieces) that an unusual atmosphere grabs me and I'll probably think about it a bit before writing anything; then outline whatever I can. Sometimes I've started in pastels on black paper.
