Chorale Lyrics

I'm going to set music to a set of lyrics for a chorale. I've never set music to lyrics before so I think its about time to start!

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some lyrics that are copyright free? Both sacred and secular are fine.

Has anyone done this before?

Why don't you try taking old poems, that aren't anymore under the Mickey Mouse-Law. I don't know much about poetry, let's say english or american
Edgar Allen Poe wrote beautiful ones.

They are always up for grabs…
Generally, there are few problems, also with contemporary poetry, just call the author and ask. I’ve asked some, and never met anyone objecting…

I don't know off hand where you could find sacred texts, but I'm sure if you did an online search you could find a site that has some. I only know sacred texts from studying choral music.

Here are some sacred texts you could look up and search:

Biblical texts (The Psalms are always nice)

(Some of these texts are biblical passages translated into Latin)
Nissi Dominus
Magnificat
Mass text (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei)
Requiem Mass text
Dixit Dominus
Nunc Dimitis
Te Deum
Beatus Vir
Laudate Pueri

This is all I could think of right now. Hope this helps.

Great, thanks for the help with this. I'm not very religious so I don't know where to get sacred texts. The Psalms seem like a good idea too.

Any ideas for lyrics for an anthem?

The first thing I think of when it comes to Anthem is Handel's Zardok the priest. The lyrics are english, I think the were written for the piece, as appose to the music been written for the lyrics.

I love Adrienne Rich's poems - not to everyone's taste though her love poems are worth a try - I started to set one myself (but there are 22, if I remember).

Are you writing it for a choir or (e.g.) a madrigal group - or accompanied soloist?

At least, all of it is online: http://www.poemhunter.com/adrienne-rich/poet-6717/

And she’s still alive…

So it’s copyright protected all right, but if you find something you want to use, try and contact her, and if you don’t get through, just go ahead.

If you are going to publish it later, you need to try harder to get clearance. But for a few performances only, nobody makes a fuss.
